Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Brandon Samaniego from Lakewood, California has announced he plans to swim at the University of Wyoming. Samaniego just wrapped up his senior year at Woodrow Wilson High School and will join the Cowboys in the fall of 2020. He wrote on social media:

“It looks like I’ll be hanging up my SoCal sandals for a pair of Wyoming Cowboy boots! Though I am sad that I am leaving California, but I am super excited to continue my education at @uofwyoming !!Thanks to everyone for all your support!!! #uwyobound”

Samaniego placed 3rd in the 500 free (4:30.26) and 7th in the 200 IM (1:55.82) as a junior at the 2019 CIF-Southern Section Division II Championships. That marked a big improvement over his sophomore season where he had been 12th in the 500 (4:39.15) and hadn’t made finals in the IM (21st with 1:59.34). His senior season was canceled due to COVID-19 (California high school swimming takes place in the spring).

Samaniego swims year-round with Irvine Novaquatics. A Summer Juniors qualifier in the 1000/1650 free and a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 500 free, he competed at 2019 Winter Juniors West in the 500/1650 free and 400 IM, placing 16th in the mile. He competed at 2020 Carlsbad Sectionals at the end of February/beginning of March and placed 3rd in the 500 free (4:28.95), 3rd in the 1000 free (9:19.23), and 15th in the 400 IM (4:02.34). He earned PBs in the 1000 free, 200 fly, and 400 IM at the meet. A month earlier he had notched PBs in the LCM 200 free (1:58.45), 200 fly (2:09.17), and 200 IM (2:15.21) to kick off the 2020 long course season.

Top SCY times:

  • 1650 free – 15:23.30
  • 1000 free – 9:19.23
  • 500 free – 4:28.94
  • 400 IM – 4:02.34
  • 200 IM – 1:55.66

Samaniego’s best times would have scored for Wyoming at the 2020 Western Athletic Conference Championships in the 1650 (4th), 500 free (B final), and 400 IM (B final). He will overlap two years with Ryan Netzel (15:18.11/9:17.13/4:23.99) and three years with Robert Mitchell (15:42.67/9:28.06/4:30.87), Cameron Murphy (9:45.26/4:31.75), and Andrew Rodriguez when he arrives in Laramie. He’ll join Reilly Gilbert in the class of 2024.

NCAA D2 B-Finalist Bennett Maczka Will Transfer from Queens to TCU

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

Rising 6’6″ junior freestyler Bennett Maczka is transferring from NCAA Division II Queens University to Division I TCU next season. He has 2 years of eligibility remaining.

After missing the NCAA Championships as a freshman in 2019, in 2020 Macska qualified for the meet in the 200 free. The meet was ultimately canceled midway through the 2nd day of competition with the oncoming coronavirus pandemic.

On day 2 of the meet, Maczka placed 10th in the 200 free, qualifying for the B-final. He was also scheduled to swim the 100 free individually, where he was the 32nd seed.

Maczka attended Pearce High School in Plano, Texas, which is about 50 miles from the TCU campus. There, he was primarily a sprint freestyler, but at Queens he really progressed into more of a 100/200 yard swimmer, with his 200 free showing the most progress.

Time Progression:

After HSFreshman YearSophomore Year
50 free21.5821.3721.04
100 free46.4845.6644.8
200 free1:42.371:39.061:37.58
500 free4:38.674:39.214:35.04

The TCU men finished 3rd out of 3 teams at last year’s Big 12 Championships. Because of the unique nature of the conference, where Texas is the dominant team but doesn’t usually take a full swing at the conference beet, there’s a unique two-team dual meet between West Virginia and TCU to decide 2nd in the conference. Last year, for example, there were only 7 scorers at Big 12s in the men’s 200 free, with Texas taking the top 4 spots, TCU the next 2, and West Virginia the last.

While West Virginia beat TCU at the meet overall last season, the middle-distance freestyles are an area where the Horned Frogs were able to post a significant scoring difference relative to the Mountaineers, and so Maczka fits into that mold.

Queens have won the last 5 awarded NCAA Division II Championships in men’s swimming & diving.

His older brother Blake was an All-American swimmer at the University of Michigan.

North Penn Aquatic Club’s Jack Deppen is staying in-state with a verbal commitment to Penn State for fall 2021. He’s a rising senior at The Haverford School.

I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Penn State University.  I would like to thank all my friends, family, and coaches who have helped me along the way.  I can’t wait to be a Nittany Lion! #WeAre

TOP TIMES (SCY)

  • 200 free – 1:40.32
  • 500 free – 4:35.17

  • 100 fly – 51.43

  • 400 IM – 4:05.34

Deppen, representing The Haverford School, touched fifth in both the 200 free and 500 free at the 2020 Easterns, one of the top private school championships in the country. At the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Champs – East, with North Penn Aquatic Club, Deppen competed in the 200 free, 100 back, 200 back and 200 fly. His highest finish came in the 200 free (1:41.25) at 55th.

Deppen will get a year of overlap with rising junior Michael Daly; at 1:34.7/4:17.7, Daly was the top mid-distance freestyler on the Nittany Lion roster last season by a long shot. Daly was also 1:40.6 in the 200 back last year, tenths away from the Big Ten title and the only Nittany Lion under 1:46 there.

Ginevra Molino from Torino, Italy is headed to Tallahassee to swim for Florida State University in the class of 2024. She will add to the geographically diverse first-year roster that includes Hungary’s Zsófia Kurdi, England’s Phoebe Griffiths and Pia Murray, and Arianna Ottavianelli (IA), Ashley Zettle (TX), Carson Kaufmann (TX), and Jaden Herbet (FL).

“I’m beyond excited to announce my commitment to FSU. I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to be part of the Seminoles Family! I’m also thankful to my family, to my club and to all the coaches and teammates, who grew with me all these years. I can’t wait to swim as a Nole!”

Molina trains with and represents the club team Rari Nantes Torino. She specializes mainly in IM. COLLEGE RECRUITING

On SwimSwam Podcast, we’re giving you an in-depth listen at all things swimming. Host Coleman Hodges welcomes guests and guest co-hosts alike to get perspective on our ever-changing swimming universe and break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

We sat down with the 100 freestyle savant himself, Nathan Adrian, to talk about his perfect race. He said that individually, his 100 free from the 2012 London Olympics, where he won gold by .01 and posted his lifetime best, was as close as he’s come to executing a perfect race. As far as relay performances go, Nathan was a little coy when it came to strategy, but did admit that anchoring the 4×100 medley relay in London was one of his favorite relay memories.

Although we have become accustomed to him making it look easy year after year, Nathan says that going 48 in the 100m freestyle is never easy, and he has to try very hard to do so every time he does.

Longhorn Alums Foley, Glass Bring Swimming Culture To Nine Banded Whiskey

By James Sutherland on SwimSwam

In many ways, the atmosphere and skillset created on a swim team can equip you with the tools to be successful in any area of life, particularly when working with a group with a specific goal in mind.

For University of Texas alumni Sean Foley, a 2003 grad who was apart of three national championship-winning teams, he’s taken his experiences with the Longhorns and parlayed that into developing a successful whiskey business in Austin, Nine Banded Whiskey. The co-founder and CEO since 2018, Foley has used several of the things he learned in the water while building the company.

A native of Brookfield, Wisc., Foley began swimming at a young age and never looked back.

“Brookfield has a great tradition of swimming success so it was awesome to grow up swimming in that area and for Elmbrook Swim Club,” Foley told SwimSwam. “Winning the Wisconsin State High School Championships (both individually and team) and the NCAA Championships for the University of Texas (team) both multiple years were great moments I’ll always cherish.”

After graduating from university, he had a career in the sports and entertainment industry prior to Nine Banded, including working for Octagon, Michael Phelps‘ agency, in his first job out of school.

“Those early days of working with Michael I really began to see how people manage and build consumer brands,” said Foley. “Michael worked with so many blue-chip brands who were all managed a little bit different but all the successful brands I think nail one thing: culture.

“Starting Nine Banded in Austin means we’ve had the chance to work with Austin’s great music, film, and sports cultures that help to make it the great city it is. I also think it’s really important to have people who care about each other and get behind a common goal. Kind of like a swim team.”

Under that team culture he had developed, Foley knew bringing on another Texas swimming alum, Will Glass, would make a great fit.

“Even though we didn’t swim together, I knew having Texas swimming as a common thread meant Will was a hard worker who knew how to put up with Eddie’s jokes,” said Foley.

Glass, like Foley, won three NCAA team titles with the Longhorns, doing so in 2015, 2016 and 2017, and also placed fourth individually in the men’s 100 fly in 2015 when Texas put a historic six men into the A-final.

“After studying advertising and business in college, I set out to do something I was passionate about, especially after seeing so many of my friends not enjoying work post athletics,” said Glass, who graduated in 2017. “I worked on a ranch part-time before landing a gig at Nine Banded.

“There are a lot of similarities to swimming and working on a ranch, early mornings, hot and hard work. Once I got the job at Nine Banded, I used those same skills to operate our production facility where we produce two different types of bourbon.”

Similar to Foley, Glass sees many parallels from his days at UT with the work he’s doing with Nine Banded Whiskey, and credits coaches Eddie ReeseKris Kubik and Wyatt Collins with helping him prepare for life after swimming.

“I’m incredibly thankful that I competed collegiately in college and created the network I have today,” he said. “Sean’s designed a culture that’s very similar to the way Eddie runs his program. Similarly, everyone on our team wants to win. The brotherhood that Eddie, Kris, and Wyatt have developed over the years is long-lasting.

“Sean and I both won three National Championships in two different decades, all with the same coach, something not many people share with their bosses. Swimming at The University of Texas might not have taught me the scientific and hands-on knowledge that I need to complete my job today, but it did give me the skills to be able to adapt and learn quickly.”

A typical day for Foley consists of keeping “the business on the railroad tracks.”

“I lead finance and marketing efforts primarily, and have a great COO who helps run our day-to-day business,” he said. “We are available now in about a dozen states, so there’s just a lot to keep up with on a regular basis.”

For Glass, his day-to-day duties as the Distillery Manager generally run in two-week cycles while creating new batches of bourbon.

“It starts with the dumping and blending certain barrels together,” he said. “We follow that up with a big filtration day which extracts the charcoal out of the raw product. Bourbon must be aged in new-charred oak barrels, and when you finally dump out you’d be surprised how much charcoal sediment is in the product.

“We then drive 2 ½ hours into the Hill Country to pull 250 gallons of fresh limestone filtered water out of a natural spring. This is the best day of my job. A day later we will proof down the batch of Bourbon from roughly 115 proof (57.5%) to 90 proof (45%) using hydrometer and thermometer combo. Once we get the batch to 90 proof we can begin the bottling process, which is usually done by hand.”

One of the keys in developing Nine Banded Whiskey has been integrating the fabric of the Austin community into the product.

“Nine Banded honors Austin’s history in much of what we do and how we do it in addition to the real engagement we have with our communities wherever we are,” said Foley. “We have a strong footprint across Texas and have a growing presence in southern California, Colorado, Wisconsin, Arizona, Florida, and others.

“We want to be the next great American whiskey company.”

New Zealand has been one of the nations hit least hard by the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. According to the World Health Organization, the small island nation of New Zealand had only about 1,184 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with just 22 deaths. New Zealand has a relatively small population, but even relative to population, New Zealand has had a small number of cases: about 245 per 1 million population, compared to 8,560 per 1 million population in the United States.

New Zealand hasn’t logged more than 4 new COVID-19 cases in a single day since mid-April. The nation is beginning to return to normal, and many pools and training groups have been open since May.

Junevik Wins Four, Hansson Sisters Race at Swedish Virtual National Champs

SWEDISH VIRTUAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

  • June 25-28, 2020
  • Results (at the bottom of this post)
  • Location: 30 different pools in Sweden

In late June, with results pulled from time trials at 30 different pools across the country, Sweden held a virtual national championship. While world record-holder Sarah Sjöström did not race at the meet, and some of the country’s other stars did not race full slates, several notable performances came out of the meet.

Sara Junevik had a nice meet on the women’s side, winning four events and placing third in one. The sprinter took 50s in free (26.20), back (29.08) and fly (26.83), won the 100 fly (1:01.77) and took third in the 200 IM (2:22.98).

Louise Hansson and Sophie Hansson both competed in a few events. Louise won the 100 free (55.10) ahead of Sophie (56.27), while Sophie was also the 100 breast winner (1:08.35). Second in the 100 breast went to Moa Bergdahl, born in 2003, with a 1:09.99; that appears to be a three-second drop for Bergdahl.

One of the breakout swimmers of the entire meet was 2006-born Lisa Nystrand. She won three events: the 200 breast (2:32.57), 200 IM (2:16.47) and 400 IM (4:53.57), while she took second in the 200 back (2:20.38). Nystrand dropped three seconds in the 200 breast and two in the 200 back and 200 IM. For some context, Nystrand ties for 11th in U.S. 13-14 age group history in the 200 IM, while she would rank top 25 in the 200 breast.

On the men’s side, Oskar Hoff won the 50 fly (24.09) and 100 fly (53.74), both of which were lifetime bests. Hoff just completed his freshman season with the Tennessee Volunteers in the NCAA.

Sprinters Isak Eliasson and Robin Hanson flip-flopped, with Eliasson winning the 50 free, 22.92 to 22.93, and Hanson claiming the 100 free, 49.58 to 50.86.

Swedish record-holder Erik Persson won one of three breaststroke events, going 1:01.19 in the 100. He was second in both the 50 (28.74) and 200 (2:24.02), the effects of COVID-19 training regimen showing through in the 200. In most of the longer events, times were further off bests than in the sprint races.

Winning the 50 breast ahead of Persson, at 28.72, was Louisiana State commit Emil Hassling. Hassling also won the men’s 200 IM with a 2:02.31.

By Fernando Cicutti on SwimSwam

By Daniela Kapser on SwimSwam

Fake Swimming News From Funky Trunks and Funkita

By SwimSwam Partner Content on SwimSwam

After the mother-of-all lockdowns, Aussie swimwear brands, Funky Trunksand Funkita have released the mother-of-all collections to help make the return to the water that much less painful. It’s a roll call of the company’s best and brightest to add some spark to what has been a pretty bleak year so far.

To give you a little light reading and a chance to win your own pair of Funky Trunks and Funkita, we’re posting a selection of stories explaining the origins of the funky prints. These stories may not be entirely truthful and possibly slightly embellished, which makes them perfect for posting on Facebook.

So all you have to do is jump across to our Facebook page and share your favourite funky post to go in the draw to win a pair of Funky Trunks or Funkita swimwear for your return to the pool. There’s a new post for the next three days and a chance every day to win. Check out some of the best prints below, all modelled by the Funky Trunks and Funkita F-Team athletes. Enjoy!

Our top scientists and culinary experts have joined forces to create the first ever, never ending refilling bento box. Using body heat and other by-products released by the body into the garment, the box regenerates new delicious pickled treats and surprises. The more you exercise the more snacks you can tuck into or dish out to friends and family.

Simply by wearing this print, we guarantee that you will absorb the redeeming qualities of bamboo. Benefits can include growing a metre every day and having the ability to build houses, bridges and flutes. You will be celebrated through haiku poetry and the landscape paintings in the lobby of massage parlours. And you will be irresistible to pandas.

Being a professional sunbather is a challenging and arduous job. Forced to endure long hours in the hot sun with little appreciation from others, sunbathers are prone to being burnt out and are rarely compensated for their work. Our latest print is designed to draw attention to this undervalued workforce in society, who soak up the sun’s rays for the good of others.

Admittedly we can get a little lazy when we are designing our prints because there are just so many to do. So we sometimes just hang the fabric from the roof and tip a few pots of paint over the edge and see what happens. We then tell the funky head honcho that we have worked meticulously hard on the design and our customers believe we are talented and hard-working designers.

First discovered by our Nobel Peace Prize winning microbiologist, it is now accepted within the scientific community that there are many similarities between noodles and swimwear at a molecular level. The controversial discovery has led us to develop swimwear from noodles, bringing two complementary elements on the periodic table together in a union that even a President would call ‘beautiful’.

As we prepare our submission to be recognized as a religion, the true story of our origins can now be revealed. Many years ago, our spiritual leader was beckoned by the clouds to climb the misty mountain depicted in this print. What happened next is unclear but our leader returned several days later wearing nothing but colorful loin cloths and a mission to cover the world’s population in similar attire.

Our recent IPO had to be cancelled after our projected revenue included sales to customers that exist in parallel universes. As Hollywood has proved numerous times, we all exist in an infinite number of worlds where we all must be wearing our swimwear, so imagine the sales! Thanks to some know-it-all investor who took umbrage with our claims, the IPO was cancelled and along with it our order for a new private jet.

With our broadcasting division expanding globally we are taking on the big boys with our new live streaming channel. Our viewers can choose one of our unsuspecting customers to follow around all day via cameras installed in our swimwear. If anyone finds out what we are doing we intend to completely deny knowledge of the incident and promise to do better in the future.

Consortium to Save ECU Swimming & Diving Pushes Fundraising Over $715,000

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

While both student-athletes and coaches are moving ahead with new programs for the 2020-2021 college season, a group continues their battle to save the swimming & diving programs at East Carolina University.

In the last week, they have raised $150,000 more dollars in pledges, pushing the total in pledges received past $715,000.

The group had a zoom call last week with a number of alumni, with Olympians Lauren Perdue and Ashley Twichell joining the call as well. The group plans to have a presence at a Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, where they hope that their efforts will be a topic of conversation.

The group, which includes both coaches, current student-athletes, and former student-athletes, has had trouble getting the attention of the ECU athletic department leadership in spite of their fundraising efforts. This week, though, they may have gotten at least a starting point for a number.

Speaking on a local radio show, WTIB-FM’s “Talk of the Town,” ECU Athletic Director Jon Gilbert said that it would take a fundraising level of $1.6 million annually to bring the teams back.

That number is more than the proposed 2020-2021 budget was prior to elimination, and the programs believe that they could get their annual combined budget to under $1 million, based on a proposal submitted last week to the administration.

“The administration is knowingly establishing an unrealistic standard for reviving the teams,” said Lindsay Takkunen, one of the leading forces behind Save ECU Swimming & Diving (SESD). “They know it would not take $1.6 million to bring these teams back. It’s clear they are more interested in justifying their decision to abandon these student-athletes than considering any option that keeps the teams alive. We know this is a solvable problem if ECU’s leaders would simply be willing to talk.”

The group argues that between tuition and fees paid by non-scholarship (or partial scholarship) student-athletes and $800,000 in annual support from the program from the Pirate Club, the school’s Booster Club, that the target should be set much lower.

On the show, Gilbert didn’t bring up the facility concerns that were originally used as the justification for cutting the programs.

While we were unable to find a published ECU rate of endowment payouts for fiscal year 2018, the national average over 10 years was 5.8%. To fully endow a swimming program at that rate for $1.6 million annually would require an endowment of about $27.5 million. Endowing the program at a $1 million budget annually would require about a $17 million endowment.

Prior to the outbreak, ECU says that their athletics department had a $7.5 million deficit this fiscal year, which grew to $10.2 million when the school lost money from the NCAA basketball tournament, among other sources. Gilbert said that, while these cuts were not yet enough to close the budget deficit, that no further sports would be cut, and the school would remain in FBS football (which has a 16-sport minimum).

The Minges Natatorium has an 8-lane, 25-yard competition pool and a separate 20 yard diving pool. The pool is owned by the University, and Gilbert said that they knew they needed to make a “long term financial commitment” based on its state, which included not only the pool, but also the locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The school does plan to continue to use the pool for academic purposes in the short-term, though the school’s Chancellor Ron Mitchelson did not commit to its long-term existence. The Chancellor emphasized that it was an “inadequate facility” for NCAA athletics. That is in spite of the fact that East Carolina routinely qualifies swimmers for the NCAA National Championship meet, including 2 in the 2019-2020 season.
