By Keaton Burke on SwimSwam

Apple TV has announced a new docuseries “Greatness Code” that is set to highlight the careers of 7 different superstar athletes. American swimmer and world record holder Katie Ledecky will be one of the athletes featured in one of the first season’s episodes.

The series is co-produced by Lebron James‘ Uninterrupted brand and Tom Brady’s Religion of Sports media groups.

The show will include James, Brady, Ledecky, soccer star Alex Morgan, sprinter Usain Bolt, pioneering surfer Kelly Slater, and snowboard legend Shaun White. Each episode will specifically focus on each athlete individually to show why they have managed to reach the top of their respective sports.

Ledecky certainly has a long list of achievements in swimming, just like her co-stars do in their own sport.

Ledecky exploded onto the scene at the 2012 London Olympics, where she won the 800 freestyle and broke Janet Evans‘s longstanding American record in the event. All this at just 15 years old.

The accomplishments do not stop there. She has won 5 Olympic golds, 15 World Championship golds, and holds the world record in the 400, 800, and 1500 freestyle events.

The series is set to premiere July 10 on the Apple TV Plus streaming service. Apple doesn’t publicize official subscriber numbers, but industry analysts estimate the number of subscribers at between 10 million and 33 million, with many of those having been gifted to people with Apple devices.

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

For the past few months, SwimSwam has been posting a daily swimming workout to help inspire swim coaches around the world who are looking for new ideas to try with their swimmers. Since most of the world’s pools are currently closed for business, we wanted to give swimmers and coaches an alternative set of dryland workouts to use to stay fit during the quarantine. These workouts will be designed to be done around the house. Some will use basic equipment, like medicine balls or stretch cords, while others will be all body-weight exercises.

These workouts are provided for informational purposes only.

See more at-home training ideas on our At Home Swim Training page here

Leg Conditioning

This workout, provided by US National Team swimmer Nic Fink, is all about conditioning your legs. Ideal for breaststrokers, this workout will help improve everyone’s start and push off the walls, at a minimum, even if you’re not a breaststroker.

This workout has some new exercises that you may not have seen before, so before you get started with the main set, watch the whole video and practice each movement so that once you get into the full workout, you’re ready to move with pace.

Warmup

Any dynamic leg warmup works. Here’s a good one if you don’t have one handy.

Main Set

Three times through

  • 20 x soft bounce
  • 24 x lateral squat (with weight)
  • 10 x pike jump
  • 25 x glute bridge
  • 20 x pogo jump
  • 24 x gator lunge (with weight)
  • 3 x bounds for max distance
  • 15 x hamstring curls

Cooldown

Florida Ke Governor Ron Desantis Ne Youth Sports Se Hataya Restrictions

By Sanuj Srivastava on SwimSwam

Florida ke Governor Ron DeSantis ne announce kiya ki wo all youth activities se rectrictions lift karenge isme summer camps aur organized sports bhi include hoga.

DeSantis ne is decision ko local governments aur organizations par chhod diya hai ki wo kai se wish karte hai in activities ko proceed kiya Jaye throughout the summer, iska matlab hai ki hare k municipality apna khud ka restrictions impose kar sakti hai. Governor ne kaha ki ultimately ye parents par depend karta hai ki wo apne children ko kisi sport activity mei participate karne dena chahte hai ya nahi.

“Hamare kids several months se organized activity se dur hai aur ab hume jarurat hai aise path ki unhe wapas track par laaya jaa sake,” DeSantis ne kaha. “Hum parents par trust karte hai ki wo able hai apne childrens ka decision lene ke liye. Agar aap comfortable nahi feel karte hai ye karte huye toh mat kariye. That’s fine.”

State mei almost 50,000 confirmed cases hai aur 2,200 deaths ho chuki hai, DeSaints ne point kiya ki state mei kis tarah under-25 age group mei COVID ka effect utna nahi hua hai aur ye ek reason hai ki restrictions ko loose karna kyu sense banata hai.

“Mujhe lagta hai ki data clear show kar raha hai ki jis rate se elder people infect ho rahe hai COVID ki wajah se wo kids ke comparison mei bahut jyada hai. Kids mei ye utna tez infect nahi ho raha hai,” unhone kaha.

“Ye important hai ki hum kids ko kids hi bane rahne de,” Jacksonville ke Mayor Lenny Curry ne add kiya. “Parents, coaches aur local leaders- hum sabko apne best judgement ka use karna hai aur make sure karna hai ki ise is way mei open kiya jaye ki ye completely safe ho.”

Swimming start toh ho jayegi par various municipalities guidelines ke saath.

Covid Ke Time Mei Bhi Swimmers Kaise Rakhe Positive Mindset

By Sanuj Srivastava on SwimSwam

COVID KE TIME MEI BHI SWIMMERS KAISE RAKHE POSITIVE MINDSET

Aap log ke jaise hi, mai bhi bahot utawla hu pool mei wapas jaane ke liye.

Har subah, dopahar, aur shaam ko toh 2 baar mai local news ko scroll karta hu, ek prospector ki tarah jo ki flecks of gold ki planning kar raha ho, ek keyword scan karte huye “pool reopening.”

Mai positive aur productive hone par bhi work kar raha hu.

Aur mai aisa outlook nahi apna sakta hu jo khud ke liye aur dusr ke liye helpful ho.

Is adversity aur uncertainty time mei nirasha aur hatasha mei dubna aur hamare sabse bure impulses ko samajhna understandable hai.

Aise samay mei bhi aap khud ko aur khud ke mindset ko kaise positive rakh sakte hai. Aaj is topic par baat karenge.

Ye checklist hai ki aap kaise CONQUER mindset rakh sakte hai positive rahne ke liye COVID pandemic jaise uncertainity mei bhi.

C = CONNECT

Aap physical distance maintain kar sakte hai social distance ko close karke.

Apne friends, teammates aur family members ko call kariye. Zoom meetings kariye. Facetime. Phone par baat kariye. Video games khelte huye chat kariye. Unhe fax kariye.

Aap physical distance easily maintain kar sakte hai high degree ka social distance banate huye bhi.

Is samay hum sab apne ghar par hi aur mujhe nahi lagta ki isse badhiya mauka milega un logo ke saath connect karne ka jinki hum bahot care karte hai.

O = OWN EACH OPPORTUNITY TO GET BETTER

Har din khud ke liye own kariye. Aap shayad abhi able nahi honge pool mei training karne ke liye, but aap us opportunity ko own kar sakte hai jo aap ke paas aaj hai khud ko better banane ke liye.

Ye crisis hamesha nahi rahega aur jab ye khatam hoga toh aap piche dekho aur aap ko ye proud feel hona chhaiye ki aapne is chiz ka use kitne acche se kiya. Aur aapko jo opportunities mili uska aapne acche se advantage liya.

Aapko jo karna ho kariye but make sure own the opportunity to get better.

N = NUMBER 1- BE THE NUMBER ONE STRONGEST PERSON IN YOUR GROUP.

Aap ko ek source of strength banna hoga khud ke liye bhi aur dusro ke liye bhi.

Unlogo ki dekh bhaal karna jo aapke paas hai aapki care karne ke barabar hi hai. Jab aap dusro ki help karte hai aise crisis ke time par toh iska matlab hota hai ki aap khud ki bhi help kar rahe hai.

Aap khud ko perspective dete hai dusro ke saath empathize ho kar, isse aapko strength aur perspective dono milta hai, instead of khud ko de-motivate karna ye soch kar ki kis tarah ye adversity aap par bhaari pad rahi hai.

Q = KHUD SE QUESTION KARE SELF-AWARENESS BUILD KARNE KE LIYE.

Is chance ko use kare aur serious ho jaaye is bare mei ki aapko higher level par perform karna hai wo bhi aur jyada consistent tarike se. Aur aap ye aap start kar sakte hai khud se right questionpuch kar.

Mujhe mera best perform karne ke liye kitni practice karni padegi?

Kis tarah ka mental aur emotional state ki mujhe jarurat hogi high level par perform karne ke liye?

Mujhe kya karna hoga mentally prepare hone ke liye taaki mai apni practice dominate kar saku?

Ye ek great time hai self-awareness develop karne ka aur khud se question karne ka ki apna best perform karne ke liye aapko kis chiz ki jarurat padegi. Apne best aur worst performance par nazar daliye aur dekhiye ki kya wajah thi ki wo performance best aur worst hua.

Elite swimmers khud se right questions karte hai. Mai kaise aur accha kar sakta hu? Mai kaise trip up kar sakta hu? Next step kya hona chhaiye?

In sab ke questions ke answer ya phir sense of answers aapko serious momentum denge aur un chizo par bhi aap focus karne lag jaoge jo aapke liye important hai.

U = UPGRADE YOUR MENTAL SKILLS.

Aap jante honge ki soprt mei mental aspect kitna important role play karta hai ya kar sakta hai, aur ab samay hai ki aap start kar sakte hai un mental skills ko build karna.

Visualization aapka friend hai jab tak pools close hai.

Aur apne 200 mei 3rd 50 ke time mei us discomfort aur pain ko overcome karte huye imagine kariye.

Abhi se apne mental skills par kaam karne ke se aapko tab bahot help milegi jab sab kuch normal ho jayega.

E = EXCEL.

Excellence full-time mindset hai. Ye sirf us time ke liye nahi hai jab pools open ho, ya phir jab aap accha feel kar rahe ho ya jab aap motivated ho.

Har time apna best dijiye. Jab chize hamare tarike se naa ho rahi ho ya jab pools close ho tab bhi.

Iska matlab hai ki jab aap khana khao toh ek champion ki tarah khao, apni sister ko uske homework karane mei help karna hi kyu na ho, ya phir us sweaty dryland workout ko bang out karna ho, har kaam ko ek champion ki tarah kariye.

Excellence aisi chiz hai jise aap ko hamesha saath lekar chalna chhaiye.

Isliye hamesha work karte rahiye naye routines ko develop karne mei taaki old routines ko new sw replace kiya jaa sake.

Iska matlab ye hai ki aapko scratch se start karna hoga, un sab typical struggeliness ke saath jo new routine build karte time aati hai.

Ek acchi routine aapko average se champion bana sakti hai.

25 Maggio: La Riapertura. Per Tutti Ma Non Di Tutti

By Giusy Cisale on SwimSwam

Tic toc. Tic Toc.

In acqua no.

Dalla prossima settimana in molti riusciranno a riprendere. Altri no.

In fondo pochi mesi fa eravamo tutti uguali.

Diverse strutture e diverse situazioni.

SWIMMERS KI JOURNEY KE 12 STAGES

Hello Swimmers aaj ham aapke liye behad hi khas article lekar aye hai jo ki aapko btayega ki kaise ek Swimmer Tyar hota hai, Unki journey me kya kya stages hote hai. To chaliye dekhte hai ek swimmer ki journey ke 12 stages. Ye 12 Stages SwimSmartToday Dwara Btaye Gaye Hai.

STATUS QUO.

Abhi aap ek regular kid ki tarah hi hai. Aapne abhi tak probably “team sports” kiya hoga ya phir kuch chize ball ke saath bhi ki hongi. Aapne last time water mei tab hi hit kiya hoga jab aap shower le rahe honge. Ye hi aapki duniya hai. Ek ordinary duniya. Aur aap iske alawa abhi aur kuch nahi jaante.

  1. CALL TO ADVENTURE.

Aap apne friend ko call karke bolte hai ki yaar aaja ghar par aaj video games khelte hai, but aapka friend reply karta hai ki “mai nahi aa sakta mujhe swim practice ke liye jaana hai”. Aisa unhone pahle bhi kai baar kaha tha but is baar kuch different tha kyu ki is baar aapke friend ne aapse pucha tha ki kya tum “mere saath practice par aana pasand karoge?”

  1. REFUSAL OF THE CALL.

Practice? Wo bhi subah ke 6 baje? SATURDAY ko? Sahi hai, par maybe next time. Mujhe meri neend pyari hai, mera time pyara hai aur meri land activities bhi. Mai kyu us freezing water mei jump karu wo bhi sun ke aane se 2 ghante pahle hi aur force karu apni breath ko constantly hold karne ka jabki mai apni body ki sabhi muscle ka use kar sakta hu.

  1. MEETING THE MENTOR.

  1. CROSSING THE THRESHOLD.

Aap kabhi bhi koi dare ya challenge refuse nahi karte hai, isliye aap pool par aa gaye hai apni 1st practice ke liye. Sabhi log apne saath kai saare stuff liye huye dikh rahe hai: goggles, caps, fins… aapne unme se kuch nahi liya hai abhi tak. But aapki team aapko wo sab deti hai jiski aapko jarurat hoti hai aur aapko sikhati hai ki clock ko kaise read kiya jaata hai. Aur for the first time aap pool mei ek swimmer ki tarah jump karte hai. Aur uske baad aap is clocks aur water ki special duniya ko feel karte hai.

Starting mei, aap lane ke end mei rahte hai sabhi swimmers ke piche. But aap quit nahi karte hai kyu k har din aap pichle din se better karte rahte hai (aur aap ke friends bhi utne bure nhi hote hai). Jald hi, aap apni lane mei lead karne lagte hai. Uske baad jald hi aap apni heat bhi lead karne lagte hai. Aur ek season ki training, racing, friends aur enemies banana ke baad wo time bhi aa hi jaata hai jab aapko apna biggest challenge face karna padta hai.

  1. THE APPROACH

Aapki pahli big meet ab kuch hi weeks dur hai aur taper shuru ho gaya hai. Throughout the season aap kabhi bhi itna tired aur hungry nahi feel kiye the. But ab resting shuru ho chuki hai aap apne mind aur body ko sharper Karte huye feel kar sakte hai…it’s time to race!

  1. THE ORDEAL.

Prelims aur Finals ke liye ab bas four days baaki hai, kis tarah ki swim meet hai ye? Ye most grueling event hai aapki life ka, but iske bawjood bhi aapki body strong bani hui hai aur aapki expectations ke beyond perform kar rahi hai. Coach, aapki team aur aap khud results dekh kar super impressed huye hai.

  1. THE REWARD

Meet ke baad, aap discover karte hai ki ye toh bas ek stepping stone swim meet thi aur aapne actually next level ke liye cut times bana liya! On top of that, aapko kuch mails bhi aaye hai across the country colleges se ye puchte huye ki kya aap unke liye swim karoge. Coach bhi bahot proud hai aur kahte hai “Mujhe toh ye sab beginning se pata tha.” J

  1. THE RETURN

Aap pool mei return aate hai, sab waisa hi rahta hai except iske ki is baar new teams aur new season hai. Abhi tak aap season se familiar toh ho hi chuke hai: Train, taper, race, win. But ye season different hai. Injury ne aapse dosti kar li hai, aapne sab accha kiya hai aur apna best bhi try kiya hai, but season ke end mei result aata hai ki aap haar gaye hai. Sirf hare hi nahi aapne apna personal best time bhi touch nahi kiya is baar!

  1. RESURRECTION

Aap quit toh nahi karte hai, aapne itna kuch sikh hi liya hai water se. Aap kuch aur year training karte hai, yaha waha kuch couple best times bhi banate hai, but aapke swimming career ka most part ab over ho chuka hai aur ab time aa chukka hai ki aap phir se ek swammer banne ka, land dwellers ke ordinary world mei return aane ka.

  1. RESOLUTION

Kuch saalo ke baad aapke paas successful career hai based on the lessons jo aapne pool se sikha tha: dedication, toughness, even ingenuity. Achanak hi, aap ke local club mei vacancy aati hai unhe coach ki jarurat hai. Unhe aapki aur aapke experience ki jarurat hai.

9 Baate Jo Ek Swim Parents Hi Samjh Sakte Hai

09 Things Jo Aap Sikhte Hai Swim Parent Banne Ke Baad

Swimmer ya phir swim parent lifestyle koi joke nahi hai.

Week-long chalne wale competitions, pool mei pura- pura din bitana, aur ek season jo truly kabhi bhi end nahi hota hai.

Fashion se lingo tak, swim parent banne ka matlab hai ki swimming ke new world ko adopt karna jis tarah aap ka kid kar raha hota hai.

Ye wo 09 things hai jo aap sikhte hai ek swim parent ban karJ.

  1. Duniya 2/3rd Se Jyada Water Se Bhari Hui Hai

Car seat, couch, yaha tak ki dog par pade soggy marks? Aapki puri duniya hi wet rahti hai. All The Time.

  1. IF YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES FOR JUST FEW MOMENTS YOU MISS YOUR KID’S RACE.

Ye sirf ek swim parents hi samajh sakte hai day long swim meet mei jaane ka kya frustration hota hai aur sirf us :30 seconds ko miss karna jisme aapke swimmer ne actually compete kiya tha.

  1. Aap Ek New Language Sikh Lete Ho.

“Heat sheets” blanket ke liye term nahi hai. “DFL” koi runaway football league nahi hai. Aur aap jaante hai ki dono haath se touch kar ke head up nahi karna kitna important hai.

  1. YOUR GROCERY BILLS EXPLODE.

Ye dekh kar shock hota hai aapka kid kitna food consume karne laga. Jo ki sense bhi banata hai- wo ab grow kar rahe hai aur unhe food, vegetables, fruits ki jarurat hota hai sustain growth ke liye. But hectic schedule aurv daily workout and practice ki wajah se is samay baache jyada consume karte hai, jisse aapke bills mei kaafi increment hota hai.

  1. Chlorine Ki Smell

Sabka apna apna signature scent hota hai jo wo wear karte hai ya develop karte hai par wo use barely hi notice karte hai. Swimmers aur unke parents ke case mei Chlorine No. 5. Hai jo ki har season ke liye fashionable hota hai, ye wo scent hai jo kabhi bhi out of style nahi jaata hai.

  1. Subh Jaldi Uthna Kabhi Bhi Asan Nahi Hota.

Kuch chize aap adulthood mei learn karna sikhte hai. Wo chize hai jaise ki responsibility, apni vegetables khana, Capitalizing letters. But 4:45am par uth kar wahi home-pool duty nibhana? Kabhi bhi easy nahi hota hai.

  1. Swimming Jitna Dikhta Hai Usse Jyada Difficult Hai.

Aisa assumption bani hui hai ki swimming ek simple sport hai. Bathing suit put on karo, pool ke us side tak jitna fast swim kar sakte ho karo. Boom… Done… But uske piche bahot si chize hoti hai jo chalti rahti hai, legions ke officials se lekar, technique and form ke bahot hi technical aspects tak.

  1. Aapko Hmesa Ek Parent Aise Milenge Jo Timing Booth Par Najar Ayenge.

Local pools ke timing system fickle ho sakte hai. Sabhi log ek na ek baar jab apne parents ke saath pool mei jaate hai toh unke parents is glitch timing system ke bare mei jarur bolte hai. Jab aapko aise parents mil jaaye toh aapko unhe kabhi bhi dur nahi jaane dena chhaiye.

  1. Non Swimmer Ke Sath Swimming Ko Lekar Bahas.

Jab aapke neighbor ka kid swimming nahi karta ho aur wo apni eyebrow upar karke aapse puchte hai ki “kya swimming ek real sport bhi hai,” ye sunte hi aapke andar ka wo deep incensed reaction ko chingari laga deta hai aur aapke andar ka jwalamukhi foot jaata hai. Aur aap unse debate karne lag jaate hai.

Could UConn Athletics Teams Be Next on the Chopping Block?

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

The University of Connecticut “must do away with some teams and programs,” according to Mike Anthony of the Hartford Current. Anthony, who covers UConn athletics regularly, suggests that the school might have to cut as many as 8 of its 24 athletics programs, which would leave it at the minimum 16 to continue as an FBS football program – the top level of collegiate football.

Financial pressure in Storrs has continued to mount over the last week, with the school warning that revenue losses due to the coronavirus pandemic could force ‘deep cuts’ to academic and athletic programs in the coming year. The school has not explicitly said that they will cut programs, but have said that big financial cuts to “academic, administrative, athletics, literally everything we do” are coming.

The school is projecting between $65 million and $129 million in revenue lost if the university moves classes online in the fall, with that decision planned to be made by June 30.

The school has instructed the athletics department to reduce its university subsidy by $10 million per year by 2023. That’s similar territory to East Carolina, which announced the cut of 4 programs, including swimming & diving, earlier this week. ECU sponsored 20 sports previously, which made it the second-biggest program in the AAC behind UConn’s 24.

Announcements on cost reductions are expected after a June 12 budget workshop.

Part of the proposal to close the gap is to count out-of-state student-athletic scholarships at an in-state value, which is really just a budget shift from athletics to the university, but would be projected to shrink the subsidy by about $4 million.

A big piece of the gap has to do with UConn’s return to the Big East Conference, where they will return as a member on July 1, 2020. That will make the football team an independent, as the basketball-focused Big East doesn’t sponsor football. Leaving the Big East includes a $17 million AAC exit fee.

In the 2018-2019 season, UConn reported operating revenues for athletics of just over $79 million, which included $30 million in direct institutional support and another $8 million in student fees. Their expenses were $80,905,645. As recently as 2013, the department did not require a financial subsidy, but a move to the AAC hurt its media revenues. The hope is that the move to the Big East Conference with the powerhouse UConn basketball program will result in a bigger television payout. The Big East signed a 12-year, $500 million media rights agreement with Fox in 2013.

UConn football has signed an independent television deal with CBS Sports Network, and while the school did not disclose financial terms, they said it is worth “seven figures,” meaning between $1 million and $10 million.

So far, NCAA Division I institutions have announced the cut of 17 athletics programs since the coronavirus pandemic began. Some of those programs, like ECU, were already in financial trouble, which was exacerbated by the pandemic. Schools that have cut programs include Akron, Bowling Green State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, East Carolina, FIU, Furman, Old Dominion, and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

NCAA Division I programs cut

  • Akron (17). Men’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s tennis.
  • Bowling Green (17). Men’s baseball
  • Central Michigan (16). Men’s indoor track & field, Men’s outdoor track & field
  • Cincinnati (18). Men’s soccer
  • East Carolina (16): Men’s swimming, Women’s swimming, Men’s tennis, Women’s tennis
  • FIU (16). Men’s indoor track & field.
  • Furman (18). Men’s baseball, Men’s lacrosse.
  • Old Dominion (18). Men’s wrestling.
  • Wisconsin-Green Bay (18). Men’s golf, Women’s golf.

The UConn women’s swimming & diving team finished 6th out of 6 teams at the 2020 AAC Conference Championship meet, while the UConn men finished 4th out of 4 teams. The defending men’s conference champions from ECU having been cut and UConn’s departure leaves just Cincinnati and SMU sponsoring men’s swimming programs in the American.

Croatia vs. World Water Polo Match Planned to Honor Retiring Ratko Rudic

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

Ratko Rudic, who was named this week by two Wall Street Journal writers as “the world’s greatest coach,” announced his retirement from coaching, for a 2nd time, earlier this year.

In an interview this week with Italian media, Rudic reaffirmed that decision, saying that there was no possibility of him returning to coach Italian side Pro Recco, the team he coached into the coronavirus shutdown. Saying he was attracted by the prospect of winning the European Champions League, one of the few honors not on the legendary coach’s resume, he now says that the dream is gone after the stoppage of play.

But, there might still be one match remaining for Rudic’s legendary direction.

The Executive Director of the Croatian Water Polo Association revealed to Croatian outlet Sportskse Novosti that the federation was working on organizing a spectacle for Rudic’s farewell.

Specifically, that is due to include a “Croatia vs. the World” match, with a target of roughly from the end of the summer. The match will bring together Rudic’s former players from a wide-spanning career, including legends that Rudic coached to Olympic gold, for a match for the ages.

Rudic has coached a number of countries around the world, including 4 Olympic gold medals and an additional bronze medal as a coach. In 1984 and 1988, he led Yugoslovia to back-to-back Olympic gold medals. Four years later, he led the Italians to the top of the podium in Barcelona. In 1996, the Italians won bronze, and in his final podium appearance as a coach, for his crowning achievement, he led his home Croatian team to another gold medal in Lond in 2012.

Brazilian World Championships Medalist Bruno Fratus Is Back In The Water

By Retta Race on SwimSwam

What a difference a few weeks make, especially in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Just last month SwimSwam spoke with multi-World Championships medalist Bruno Fratus of Brazil, with the 30-year-old sharing his at-home training regimen while longing for the day he could dive back into his chlorinated domain.

The time of return has come, as the state of Florida in which Fratus resides has begun lifting restrictions on public spaces, including indoor and outdoor swimming pools. That means freestyle ace Fratus has been able to get wet once again at his home pool of Coral Springs Swim Club.

When asked about his gameplan for training now that he can get back to semi-normal, Fratus told SwimSwam, “We’re planning on patiently and steadily building back up as we have about 15 months to ‘the big meet’. The big meet, of course, is a combination of the Brazilian Olympic Trials and then the postponed Tokyo Olympic Games now set for July of 2021.

Fratus had been settling for hand weights and dryland, as most other swimmers forced out of the water have had to do the past couple of months.

The training changeup is par for the course for this sprinter who already had made a big move last fall in terms of his coaching lineup. After parting ways with longtime leader and former Auburn University head coach Brett Hawke, Fratus announced in February of this year he’d be returning to Arilson Silva.

Silva serves as the supervisor of the 2019 World Championships silver medalist’s training program, while Fratus’ wife Michelle Lenhardt continues to be his daily coach. Helvio Affonso is the physiologist, while Carla Di Pierro is the psychologist component of the collaborative coaching effort helping steer Fratus to another potential Olympic final.

SEC Will Allow Voluntary ‘Strength & Conditioning’ Exercises to Resume June 8

$

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

The NCAA announced on Friday that it would allow all Division I sports to resume voluntary, in-person activities to resume on June 1. With conferences having taken a strong role during the coronavirus in organizing its schools for some semblance of a level playing field, however, in many cases it will still be up to those conferences to dictate when their member institutions can take advantage of the new NCAA order.

For the SEC, which includes 12 women’s swimming & diving programs and 10 men’s swimming & diving programs at its 14 institutions, these in-person activities can begin on June 8th.

Specifically, at the discretion of each university, “strength & conditioning activities that can be effectively monitored and performed while social distancing” will resume.

The SEC order also clarifies that strength & conditioning activities are also the limit under the NCAA order.

“The safe and healthy return of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and our greater university communities have been and will continue to serve as our guiding principle as we navigate this complex and constantly-evolving situation,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “At this time, we are preparing to begin the fall sports season as currently scheduled, and this limited resumption of voluntary athletic activities on June 8 is an important initial step in that process. Thanks to the blueprint established by our Task Force and the dedicated efforts of our universities and their athletics programs, we will be able to provide our student-athletes with far better health and wellness education, medical and psychological care and supervision than they would otherwise receive on their own while off campus or training at public facilities as states continue to reopen.”

As part of its recommendations, the Task Force prepared a series of best practices for screening, testing, monitoring, tracing, social distancing and maintaining cleaned environments. These recommendations will serve as a roadmap for each school prior to and upon the return of student-athletes to their campuses.

“While each institution will make its own decisions in creating defined plans to safely return student-athletes to activity, it is essential to employ a collaborative approach that involves input from public health officials, coaches, sports medicine staff, sports performance personnel and student-athletes,” Sankey said. “Elements of the Task Force recommendations provided key guidance for determining the date of the return to activity.”

In addition to standard infection prevention measures as approved by public health authorities such as facility cleaning and social distancing, recommended enhanced health and safety measures include:

  • Enhanced education of all team members on health and wellness best practices, including but not limited to preventing the spread of COVID-19
  • A 3-stage screening process that involves screening before student-athletes arrive on campus, within 72 hours of entering athletics facilities and on a daily basis upon resumption of athletics activities
  • Testing of symptomatic team members (including all student-athletes, coaches, team support and other appropriate individuals)
  • Immediate isolation of team members who are under investigation or diagnosed with COVID-19 followed by contact tracing, following CDC and local public health guidelines
  • A transition period that allows student-athletes to gradually adapt to full training and sport activity following a period of inactivity

During the month of June, NCAA rules permit only strength and conditioning personnel to supervise athletics activities. Organized practices and other required physical activities remain prohibited in all sports.

What this means for swimming, which by its nature could be considered a ‘strength & conditioning’ activity, is not yet clear. One SEC coach told us that his school is interpreting swimming as a conditioning activity, but that in an early reaction to the rules, the school is planning to bring fall sports back to campus first (football, volleyball, soccer) to monitor the impact and shore-up safety protocols before opening up campus to winter or spring sport athletes.

Many swim programs have explored the possibility of using a club team loophole to get their athletes back together. With many NCAA coaches also serving as coaches with USA Swimming member clubs, it’s possible that they will be able to hold practices for their USA Swimming member clubs that were made up of their registered varsity athletes.

The SEC is the first of the Power 5 conferences to react to the NCAA decision, with none among the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, or Pac-12 having yet announced a plan publicly. Generally, the states that hose institutions in the SEC have made more progress on reopening businesses, including pools, than have most of their peers.
