2019 SPEEDO WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – EAST

Winning the event tonight in Atlanta at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East, Claire Curzan has broken the 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record in the 50 freestyle. Her lifetime best of 21.77 tonight surpasses the old mark of 21.82 set at this meet a year ago by Gretchen Walsh.

Curzan, who trains with the TAC Titans in North Carolina, missed the U.S. Open last week due to being sick. She looks to be back in top form now, though, kicking off her meet with an NAG record.

TOP U.S. 15-16 PERFORMERS, WOMEN’S 50 FREE, ALL-TIME

  1. Claire Curzan– 21.77 (2019)
  2. Gretchen Walsh – 21.82 (2018)
  3. Torri Huske – 21.95 (2019)
  4. Simone Manuel/Kate Douglass – 22.04 (2013/2016)
  5. Alex Walsh – 22.08 (2018)

This was only Curzan’s second sub-22 performance ever. Her other time under 22 was a 21.89 from March of this year, which stands at the current 13-14 NAG record. She was the first in 13-14 U.S. history to ever break 22 seconds, doing so with that 21.89 from March, which came just a week after she went a 22.01 to come one-hundredth off of Walsh’s former 13-14 NAG of 22.00.

Curzan only joined the 15-16 age group this summer. With about a year and a half left in the age group, her time would come in at #7 in 17-18 rankings, where Manuel holds the NAG at 21.32, a time done at the 2015 NCAA Championships in her freshman year at Stanford.

In overall 18& under American history, only Manuel (17), Douglass (17), and Weitzeil (18) have been faster at a meet before getting to college. Several women have been 18 years old and rank higher than Curzan when it comes to 17-18 history, lest her being #7 if projected into that age category, but they hit those times after having done at least a semester of collegiate training. Curzan is a high school sophomore.

2019 Ontario Junior International

The annual Ontario Junior International meet is set to get underway Friday from the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, with the top 18 & under athletes from Canada and Great Britain in action.

Women’s Field

The most notable name on the psych sheets is two-time World Championship medalist and Canadian Record holder Kayla Sanchez, who has been making some noise over the past few months competing with the Energy Standard club in the International Swimming League.

Sanchez won’t be swimming all of her best events this weekend but does come in as the top seed in both the women’s 50 back and 50 free. The 18-year-old set a new National Record in the latter three weeks ago at the ISL’s European derby, blazing to a time of 23.71. She’s entered here with a time of 23.94 (her unofficial junior world record set last year), almost a full second and a half clear of the rest of the field.

The Scarborough, Ont., native will also contest the women’s 100 breast, seeded third, and the 100 fly, seeded fifth.

Other notable names set to compete on the women’s side include the Etobicoke trio of Katrina BellioHanna Henderson and Summer McIntosh, Brits Sophie Freeman and Katie Gooburn, along with Brooklyn Douthwright of the Codiac Vikings.

Bellio is the top seed in the 400 and 800 free, Henderson is ranked inside the top-3 in all six of her events, including first 200 back and 50 fly, and McIntosh, the 13-year-old who assaulted the 11-12 NAG Records over the past year, sits second in both the 400 IM and 800 free.

Freeman, 15, leads the field in both the 100 and 200 fly, and the 16-year-old Gooburn is the #1 ranked swimmer in the 50 and 100 breast.

Douthwright leads the 100 and 200 free as the only swimmer seeded sub-55 and sub-1:58.

Men’s Field

Highlighting the men’s field among the Canadians are 2019 World Championship team members Gabe MastromatteoJoshua Liendo and Cole Pratt.

Mastromatteo, a 17-year-old out of Kenora, holds down the top seed in all three breast events, Liendo leads the pack in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly, and Pratt is entered in a whopping eight events, holding the top time in the 100 and 200 back and the 200 and 400 IM.

Another noteworthy name competing is Alberta native Finlay Knox, who set a Canadian National Record in November competing in the ISL with the London Roar. Knox did so in the 200 IM, but won’t race that event here with the ISL Finals on the horizon in one week’s time. The 18-year-old will take on the 50 free, 100 breast and 50 fly.

Among the British males competing is National Junior Record holder Matt Richards, who was sub-49 this summer in the long course 100 free. He comes in seeded second in that event (and the 50) behind Liendo, but does lead both the 200 free and 50 fly.

Others competing for Great Britain include 200 fly top seed Edward Mildred, and the #2 seed in the 200 breast Kyle Booth.

He and Forrest Frazier of Eastern Iowa turned together at the 50 wall, leading the field by half a body over Harrison Lierz of Elevation and Luke Barr from Sarpy County. Affeld moved away from Frazier on the backstroke and went way up at the halfway mark.

And then came the breaststrokers.

Tyler Lu of Seattle Metropolitan, who had moved from 8th to 3rd on the backstroke leg, took over the lead after a 29.9 breaststroke split. Lu was swimming in lane 8, away from the battle going on in the middle of the pool. There, Affeld, Ben Dillard of Sierra Marlins, Barr, and Hayden Zheng of Aquajets turned nearly in unison at the 150 wall.

Lu hung on down the stretch, though, and sealed the win with a 25.2 freestyle to stop the clock in 1:44.87. Barr’s 25.7 moved him past Affeld, who finished in third place, 1:46.14 to 1:46.27. Frazier edged Dillard for fourth.

The old mark was set 24 years ago when, in March of 1995, Guillermo Mediano swam a time of 2:02.73 during that year’s Pan American Games in the Argentinian city of Mar de Plata.

Mendez, who was born in September of 2000, 5 years after the record was set, set his mark while swimming at the same pool where he raced at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games. Back then, Mendez swam a time of 2:03.08, which was his previous best, meaning his performance this week surpasses his prior lifetime best by more than one second.

Born in Buenos Aires and a member of the Sociedad Alemana de Gimnasia de Villa Ballester swim team, Mendez’s future looks bright in terms of Argentinian swimming. With his result, the 19-year-old has also secured his spot for the forthcoming 2020 South American Championships.

During this first day of competition, renowned swimmers such as Delfina Pignatiello also claimed victories in the 400-meter freestyle (4:11.19), while Virginia Bardach won the women’s 200-meter IM (2:14.93), or Macarena Ceballos earning first place in both the 50-meter breaststroke (31.84) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:01.46).

When it comes to the men, Federico Grabich took home the 200-meter freestyle title 1:49.14), while Roberto Strelkov, Ivo Cassini, and Gabriel Morelli found individual success in the 50-meter butterfly (24.42), 800-meter freestyle (8:04.79), and 100-meter breaststroke (1:01.67), consequently.

2019 SPEEDO WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – EAST

4 swimmers have scratched out of circle-seeded heats on Friday morning at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East, though none of them were top 10 seeds.

The highest seed to scratch is Alex Borisov, who is dropping out of the boys’ 400 IM as the 11th seed. He has an additional entry in the 100 breaststroke, where he’s the 16th seed.

Paige McCormick has scratched the girls’ 200 free as the 17th seed, but she’ll still have plenty of action – she’s the 3rd seed in the 400 IM and the 82nd seed (with a long course time) in the 100 backstroke.

Kamal Muhammad has scratched the boys’ 100 fly as the 15th seed, as well as his entry in the 100 back, to leave him with no swims on Friday; and NC State commit Arsenio Bustos scratched the 100 breaststroke to focus on the 100 fly and 100 backstroke, showing off his versatility.

Also note that Preston Forst, who on Friday morning is the #1 seed in the 100 fly and the #9 seed in the 200 free, was a no-show for both of his races on Thursday morning.

Adam Chaney of the Mason Manta Rays is also expected to make his debut for the meet on Friday after missing the 50 free, where he was the top seed, on Thursday. Chaney is scheduled to race the 200 free (with his teammates Carson Foster and Jacob McDonald on either side of him in heat 12), as well as the 100 back as the #2 seed and the 100 fly as the #8 seed.

2019 Winter Junior Championships – East – Long Course Time Trials

  • December 10th, 2019
  • Georgia Tech, Atlanta, Georgia
  • 50m (LCM) Session
  • Results on Meet Mobile – “Long Course Time Trials”

A handful of new Olympic Trials qualifying times were set in the pre-meet long course time trial on Tuesday at the Georgia Tech pool. The day before the short course Winter Junior Championships – East began, swimmers took to the pool for a chance at long course racing as the Olympic Trials year approaches.

Among them was a first-ever Olympic Trials standard for 14-year old JoJo Ramey of the Fishers Area Swimming Tigers in Indiana. She swam a 2:13.34, which cut more than 2 seconds off her previous lifetime best of 2:15.38 in that event. Her new time also easily clears the Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 2:14.69, which will make her one of the youngest competitors next summer in Omaha.

That swim also jumped her into 20th place all-time in the 13-14 age group in USA Swimming history.

In spite of that big time drop in long course, she wound up adding time in her only individual race so far of the Winter Junior Championships – East meet: the 500 free.

Other Olympic Trials Standards set in the Long Course Time Trial:

  • 17-year old Abby Arens from the Marlins of Raleigh improved her best times in both the 100 fly (1:00.47 to 1:00.37) and 200 IM (2:16.60 to 2:15.91). She already had Olympic Trials cuts in both races, so those swims will simply improve her seeds in Omaha. In the official competition, racing on Thursday, she would cut more than 2 seconds off her best time in the 200 yard IM to swim 1:56.48 and win the race.
  • 16-year old Letitia Sim from TNT Swimming dropped .45 seconds in the 200 breaststroke to swim 2:33.04. That dips her under the Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 2:33.29

CAMPIONATI ASSOLUTI OPEN VASCA LUNGA 2019

2019 Ontario Junior International

Four Canadian National Age Group Records fell on the opening night of the 2019 Ontario Junior International meet in Toronto, along with some meet records on what was a very fast day of racing.

NAG Records Go Down

The first NAG of the day came during the prelims Kenora’s Gabe Mastromatteo went sub-1:00 for the first time in the men’s 100 breaststroke, clocking 59.88 to eraseFinlay Knox‘s 15-17 age group record of 59.92. Mastromatteo went on to torch his newly minted record in the final in 58.97, with Knox taking second in 1:00.11.

North York’s Joshua Liendo also broke a record in both prelims and finals, first crushing his boys’ 15-17 100 fly record of 52.45 in a time of 51.67. The 17-year-old took it town a second time at night, clocking 51.48, narrowly missing the meet record of 51.43 set by Great Britain’s Jacob Peters last year.

Another Brit, Edward Mildred, was the runner-up tonight in 52.27, breaking his National Junior Record of 52.62 set in the heats.

Also taking down a Canadian NAG was Summer McIntosh, who recently turned 13 after rewriting the record book in the 11-12 age group. After missing Mary-Sophie Harvey‘s 13-14 mark of 4:40.94 by just 0.06 in the prelims, the Etobicoke product knocked it off by almost three seconds tonight in 4:38.16. Coming into the meet her best was 4:43.98 from October.

15-year-old Ashley McMillan of KISU was the runner-up in 4:39.21, crushing her old PB of 4:45.06 by almost six seconds.

In the men’s 400 IM, Cascade’s Cole Pratt took out his 15-17 NAG and meet record of 4:10.66 in 4:09.22, winning by almost 11 seconds.

Meet Records Fall

World Championship medalist Kayla Sanchez took one out in the women’s 50 backstroke, recording a personal best time of 26.36 to lower Danielle Hanus‘ 26.63 from 2016. Coming into the competition with a best of 26.78, Sanchez is now just over two-tenths shy of Kylie Masse‘s National Record of 26.15.

Sanchez also had a win in the 100 breaststroke. The 18-year-old broke 1:10 for the first time this morning in 1:07.13 and then got down to 1:05.93 tonight to top the final by over two seconds.

In the men’s 200 freestyle, Great Britain’s Matt Richards had a sizzling swim of 1:43.64, tying Andrew Seliskar‘s meet record from 2014. He also improves on his British Junior Record of 1:44.53 set in the prelims.

Mildred was second in 1:45.51, and Liendo took third in 1:46.34.

We also saw new meet marks set in the distance events, as Island’s Chantel Jeffrey broke the women’s 1500 mark by over five seconds in 16:43.98, and Nepean’s David Quirie edged out the men’s 800 record by 0.09 in 7:53.56. Michael McGillivray was also under the old record, 0.02 back in 7:53.58.

OTHER WINNERS

  • Brit Tamryn Van Selm won a tight race in the women’s 200 free, clocking 1:57.77 to out-touch Brooklyn Douthwright (1:57.83) and Katrina Bellio (1:58.15).
  • Etobicoke’s Hanna Henderson won the women’s 100 fly by doing the same thing as Mastromatteo. Cracking a minute for the first time this morning in 59.79, she hit 58.56 to win easily tonight.
  • Toronto’s Graysen Bernard broke 25 seconds for the first time to win the men’s 50 back in 24.92.
  • The Etobicoke team of McIntosh, Elan Daley, Henderson and Bellio claimed the women’s 800 free relay by over five seconds in 8:07.03.
  • The Pointe-Claire quartet of Philippe RobinsEduard Fullum-HuotStanford Li and Patrick Hussey took the men’s 800 free relay in 7:25.41. 800 free winner Quirie was the lone swimmer to split sub-1:50 for seventh-place Nepean, anchoring in 1:48.59.

2019 NCAP INVITATIONAL

  • December 12th-15th, 2019

  • Results on Meet Mobile

SwimSwam initially published an erroneous report which said that Torri Huske broke the 15-16 NAG record. Huske is 17.

Tonight’s NCAP Invitational session was highlighted by 17-year-old Torri Huske‘s 100 fly win, a best time of 50.49 to move her to #4 all-time in the 17-18 age group. The Arlington Aquatic Club sprinter hit a best by almost a full second, coming down eight tenths from her old best of 51.29. NCAP’s Phoebe Bacon was second in 51.75, a lifetime best, and NCAP’s Abby Harter clocked a 52.54 for third.

Huske just turned 17 a week ago, so she has roughly two years left in the age group. She’s now just three-tenths back of Olivia Bray‘s NAG record of 50.19, while Kate Douglass (50.30) and Regan Smith (50.45) are the only other 18 & under American women in history who have been quicker than Huske tonight.

For more context into Huske’s swim, her time would’ve taken fifth at the 2019 NCAA Championships. She still has a year and a half of high school before she enters the NCAA, though, and has yet to publicly announce an NCAA verbal commitment.

Bacon, who dropped from 52.33 to 51.75 in the 100 fly, went a best time in the 100 breast earlier in the evening. She was 1:00.39, showcasing her impressive versatility and taking a huge chunk from her best time (1:01.27). The 100 breast winner was Anna Keating of Machine Aquatics at 1:00.02, while Harter was third in 1:01.22.

Huske came back at the end of the session to win the 400 IM with a 4:11.26, touching just ahead of NCAP’s Catherine Purnell (4:12.43).

OTHER NOTABLE WINS/SWIMS

  • Chloe Stepanekof LIAC went 1:45.51 to take the open 200 free. LIAC went 1-2 in the 13-14 girls 200 free, with Tess Howley (1:47.35) edging Cavan Gormsen (1:47.55); they would’ve gone 2-3 in the open age group. Suburban Seahawks’ Lainey Mullins was 1:48.98 for third. All three are 14 years old.
  • Mullins also won the 13-14 400 IM, going 4:22.03.
  • Howley followed up her 200 free victory with a win in the 13-14 100 fly, clocking a 53.71. Kris Lawson of NCAP dominated the boys’ 100 fly, going 50.58 to win by nearly three full seconds, while NCAP 15-year-old Landon Gentry won the open race in 48.44.
  • Thacher Scannellof Greenwich YMCA was 1:38.24 to win the men’s open 200 free. In the B-final, 15-year-old JuanCarlos Castrillon went 1:39.87 to win.
  • 12-year-old Bryce Gold dominated the 11-12 girls’ 50 fly (26.45) and 50 breast (30.28).
  • Eric Liao, 16, of NCAP, was 3:55.59 to win the men’s 400 IM.

2019 FRENCH SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • Thursday, December 12th – Sunday, December 15th
  • Piscine Jean Boin, Angers, France
  • 25m (SCM) Pool
  • Live Results

After a relay start split of 20.41 in the 50 free on Thursday at the 2019 French National Championships, sprinter Florent Manaudou backed his swim up with a 20.64 to win the individual 50 free on Friday in Angers. That ties Caeleb Dressel’s best time of the year, and very-nearly matches Manaudou’s own #2 in the world time from the European Derby meet of the International Swimming League in November.

Dressel and Manaudou will be the two favorites in the 50 free at the International Swimming League finale next weekend in Las Vegas. That’s because Vlad Morozov, the European Champion and world leader this season, won’t be in attendance – his Iron team didn’t qualify for the championship meet.

Manaudou was 20.66 in the 50 free last week at the European Championships.

Manaudou also broke a Championship Record in the 50 backstroke while leading off the winning Marseille relay in a 23.16. Manaudou is the World Record holder in both the 50 free and 50 back in short course meters, though both swims are from 2014.

Also breaking a Championship Record on Friday was Marie Wattel in the women’s 50 fly final. She swam a 25.16 to just out-touch Melanie Henique, who was 2nd in 25.24. Last week, at the European Championships, Henique set the French Record in the 50 fly in 24.56 to win a gold medal.

In the women’s 400 IM, Lara Grangeon, a 3-time European Championship medalist in the event in short course meters, swam a 4:29.60 to win and beat out Fantine Lesaffre, who finished 2nd in 4:29.89. Lesaffre is the defending European Champion in the event in long course.

For Grangeon, the time almost exactly matches her swim from last year’s World Short Course Championships. That’s in spite of a nearly-wholesale shift to open water training after qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games this summer in the open water 10km race. Grangeon pulled out of the ISL this season to focus on her open water training, but had enough, at least, to jump to 12th in the world this season.

Other Day 2 Winners:

  • Charlotte Bonnet swam the best time of her season in the 200 free, going a 1:52.81 to win the race ahead of Wattel by more than 2 seconds. Bonnet has had a limited competition schedule this fall, swimming in just 1 ISL meet and 1 other meet since the World Championships – including no racing at the European Championships.
  • Antoine Viquerat won the men’s 200 breaststroke in 2:06.33.
  • Cyrielle Duhamel won the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:06.63, just-out touching Fanny Deberghes, who placed 2nd in 1:06.72.
  • 19-year old Yohann Ndoye Brouard won the men’s 100 backstroke in 50.72, beating out 18-year old Mewen Tomac (51.41). Tomac’s swim is a new French Junior Record in the event.
  • Matthias Marsau won the men’s 200 fly in 1:56.38. That’s a lifetime best for him, beating out his old top time of 1:58.05 that was set in 2017.

Central Bucks Breaks 15-16 US National Age Group Record in Mixed 200 Free Relay

  • Psych Sheets
  • Results on Meet Mobile

A group of 15-16 swimmers from the Central Bucks Swim Team in Pennsylvania has cleared the 15-16 National Age Group Record in the mixed 200 yard freestyle relay.

The relay of John DevaneyElla Mae Gross, Viviana Vergara, and Quinn Buck combined for a 1:31.30 in the event final, which betters the old record of 1:32.30 that was set by St. Andrew’s in Florida earlier this year.

Record-Setting Splits:

  • Devaney – 21.74
  • Gross – 24.66
  • Vergara – 23.64
  • Buck – 21.26

The relay used a non-traditional male-female-female-male lineup for their relay. Most mixed free relays use a male-male-female-female order.

The relay finished 3rd behind a pair of teams from Greenwich, Connecticut (the Greenwich YWCA and the YMCA of Greenwich, which field separate teams). Both of those Greenwich relays, however, had swimmers on their relay that were too old to qualify for 15-16 records.

The 17-18 and 15-18 records in the event still belong to the Suburban Seahawks, who in 2018 swam a 1:26.54 in the event.

USA Swimming began recognizing mixed-gender relay National Age Group Records in 2018, and earlier this summer released the benchmark times required to set records.

The same group from Central Bucks will be shooting for the 400 free relay record later in the meet as well. The 15-16 record in that event is currently vacant, and USA Swimming has not released a benchmark time for the 400 free relay.
