Jersey Shore YMCA Swim Team Wreath and Swag Sale
The Holiday Season is Just around the Corner!!
And with that, the time has arrived for the Jersey Shore YMCA Swim Team's MAJOR fundraiser of the season…the annual holiday wreath sale!! This fundraiser helps pay for coaches’ salaries, equipment and overall expenses the team incurs. Because the swim team MUST entirely pay for itself, the sale is super important. Also, the sale helps us keep our registration prices low…other area swim team have registration costs that are in the $100, $200 and $300’s! YIKES!! As in the past, we ask that each family participate in this fundraiser by selling a minimum of 10 wreaths and/or swags. We must sell at least 500 wreaths or swags to meet our financial obligations so let’s set a goal!! But honestly, the more the better!
The order form can be downloaded here. Fill out the form and hand-off to a Jersey Shore swimmer. Here are some important dates to keep in mind:
- Monday, November 12 - Orders (and money) are due.
- Sunday, November 18 – wreaths delivered to the YMCA (early Sunday morning) and we will need volunteers to help unload the truck. A sign-up sheet will be placed on the bulletin board at the pool once practices start ….. as always the more volunteers we have the quicker we will get done! Check out postings, from 2010 and 2011, here and here of the delivery date mayhem!
- Sunday, November 18 – volunteers needed at 11:00am at the JS YMCA so we can prepare/organize the wreaths for pick-up. Pick-up hours are from 11:30 – 1:30. Again, a sign-up sheet will be placed on the bulletin board – and keeping with the “theme” the more volunteers we have, the quicker we can get everything organized!!!
Note that the 'Fresh Pine Wreath' is really a 'Fresh Fir Wreath' |

New Trier National Record Holder Mangan Commits to Michigan
In our preview of the Michigan men's team this year, we lamented how in an otherwise well-rounded team, the 200 backstroke was the one event where the Wolverines were unlikely to score at NCAA's, or perhaps even have a qualifier. In the next few seasons, though, that spot will no longer be a problem for the Wolverines, as Jack Mangan has given Mike Bottom his verbal commitment.
Mangan enters his senior season with bests of 49.21 in the 100 back and 1:45.67 in the 200 back, the latter of which is already on the verge of what it takes to score at the Big Ten Championships.
He especially had a great summer of long course competition. In the year 2012 alone, he knocked 6 seconds off of his personal best, culminating in a 2:03.85 in a Time Trial in Omaha. His yards improvement as a junior were not quite that big, but still significant: he knocked 4 seconds off of his 200 back, for example, and a second in the 100. He will be a big favorite in that shorter backstroke at this year's Illinois State Championship meet, after finishing 2nd last season.
Though perhaps not as well-known as a freestyler as some of his New Trier teammates like Reed Malone and Max Groedecki, he was also a member of that 400 free relay that last year became the first high school relay to ever dip under three minutes. Their overall record has since been broken, but it still stands as the National Public School Record.
His freestyle skills will be a hidden bonus for Bottom's sprint program: he was 3rd at the Illinois State Championship meet individually in 45.94. and has been a 1:39.9 in the 200.
CollegeSwimming.com ranks Mangan as one of the top 50 recruits in the class of 2013.

SwimSwam Film Fest: Kuroshio Sea – 2nd Largest Aquarium In The World
I’m a swim film festival fan, and I love this short video, Kuroshio Sea – 2nd Largest Aquarium In The World , captured by Jon Rawlinson. I posted this video over 2 years ago, and I keep coming back to it. I love how simple it is, just a locked-down camera and music, “Please Don't Go” by Barcelona.
I am always on the lookout for great swim videos. If you have an interesting or beautiful swimming-related video, please submit to Gold Medal Mel Stewart at swimswam to be featured. We appreciate all points of view on pools, lakes, rivers and oceans. Please include a little background on why you captured the video and the equipment you used (cameras, lens, editing software, etc.). Feel free to add your own story as well.
FROM THE PRODUCER:
The main tank called the “Kuroshio Sea” holds 7,500-cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water and features the world's second largest acrylic glass panel. Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank.

Three candidates for the 2019 and 2021 FINA World Championships
FINA announces today that the national federations of China, Japan and Korea have expressed their intention to be involved in the bid process for the organisation of the 2019 FINA World Championships, and eventually for the 2021 edition, the specific cities to be confirmed later. Before 2019 and 2021, the 15th FINA World Championships will take place in Barcelona (ESP) from July 19-August 4, 2013, while the 16th and 17th edition will take place respectively in Kazan (RUS) in 2015 and Guadalajara (MEX) in 2017.
China, Japan, and Korea All Intend to Bid for 2019/2021 World Championships
FINA has announced early this morning that there are, at least, three Asian bidders for both the 2019 and 2012 long course World Championships.
Though these events are a long ways away, FINA of late has been getting far ahead of their schedule, now reaching a decade into the future.
Though the bidding cities have not yet been announced, the countries of Japan, Korea, and of course China (who bids for everything) have all proffered up interests in hosting the 18th and 19th edition of the championships. FINA did not say if these are the only bidders for the two events, but as international federations around the globe continue to try and capitalize on the exploding Asian markets, one would assume that at least one of the two events will land in the region.
The timeline for those bidding for 2019 and 2012 is as follows:
- January 16, 2013: Meeting to take place between FINA and interested National Federations/Cities in Lausanne. FINA will provide the interested NF’s and Cities with general information, background and details of the FINA World Championships and the Bid Process.
- April 4, 2013: NF’s/Cities to submit their Formal Bid to FINA.
- July 19, 2013: Presentation of Bid by each NF/City to the FINA Bureau at a meeting to be held during the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona (ESP); followed by the FINA Bureau voting and awarding the 18th FINA World Championships 2019, and eventually the 19th edition in 2021.
- Barcelona (ESP) from July 19-August 4, 2013
- Kazan (RUS) in 2015
- Guadalajara (MEX) in 2017.
