Ryan Murphy on The Morning Swim Show @ryan_f_murphy
Oct. 25, 2012: Today&os;s edition of The Morning Swim Show features new California Golden Bear Ryan Murphy, who talks about the factors that led to his decision to move from Florida to northern California. Murphy, one of the country's top backstrokers, has Olympic prospects, but he plans to take each of the next four years one at a time in Berkeley. Before he makes the move to California, he has the Florida state championships in a couple of weeks, in which he could help the Bolles School men's team set national high school records.
Channing Crowder saw Michael Phelps smoke weed 3 weeks before getting caught
According to Channing Crowder, former Miami Dolphins linebacker and current co-host on “The Jorge Sedano Show” on 560 WQAM in Miami, he saw him smoke some weed three weeks prior to being caught taking a hit from a bong. And, Ryan Lochte is described as a pothead. And they go at him for that gaffe on ‘Game Day'. Via Larry Brown Sports and Sports Grid
“When I left Florida, Ryan Lochte was younger than me so he had to be a new freshman,” Crowder said. “And he walked around with his hippie long blond hair and he smoked weed all the time. That’s what Ryan Lochte was. The first time I saw him was in the Olympic Trials and he had the Gator (swim cap) on and I didn’t know the name Ryan Lochte — I remembered the face. And I was like, ‘Oh it’s a Gator in the Olympics.’ I looked and I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s the little hippie pothead boy that was a freshman when I was there.’”

The start of the men's 50 backstroke final at the LEN 2008 European Short Course Championships in Rijeka, Croatia. Notice the two men without tech suits on lane 2 and 7. If I'm not very much mistaken, they were Germany's Helge Meeuw (on lane 2) and Thomas Rupprath (on lane 7), opting to swim in ‘banana hammocks' rather than the brand of ‘supersuits' that they otherwise had to wear because of the German swimming federation's sponsor obligations.

Coach Rick Curl arrested and charged with long-ago sexual abuse of swimmer
Longtime Montgomery County swim coach Rick Curl surrendered to police Thursday morning to face one count of child abuse, authorities said, based on allegations that he had an ongoing sexual relationship with a young swimmer in the 1980s.
Richard J. Curl, 63, was charged in an arrest warrant on Tuesday, Montgomery County police. He faces up to 15 years if convicted on the single felony count. There is no statute of limitations in Maryland for felonies.
Co-founder of the renowned Curl-Burke Swim Club, he was banned from the sport for life by USA Swimming last month. The swim club has changed its name, and is now operating under the title Nation’s Capital Swim Club.
Police said Curl, of the 2200 block of Aryness Drive in Vienna, was interviewed by a Montgomery County detective on August 15, about three weeks after The Washington Post published an extensive interview with a former member of his swim team who said he had engaged in a sexual relationship with her and then paid her and her parents to keep quiet about it.
The woman, who agreed to be identified in The Post, is Kelley Currin. Her maiden name was Kelley Davies. Now 43, she alleged that Curl began touching her inappropriately in 1983, when she was 13 years old. The abuse continued, and grew more extensive, over the next four years, Currin said.
No other victims have come forward, according to Montgomery County Police.
Police said in a statement that the alleged abuse occurred “in various locations in Montgomery County, to include Curl’s former residences in Rockville and Darnestown and the swimming facilities at the Georgetown Preparatory School located at 10900 Rockville Pike in North Bethesda.”
Curl’s attorney arranged for him to turn himself in Thursday at about 8:30 a.m., police said. He was later released on $50,000 bond.
A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for Nov. 16, according to online court records.

BOOM: Cannon Clifton Chooses Wisconsin; Delakis Commits Too
In what is arguably the biggest recruit yet in the Whitney Hite era (and certainly at least in the top group), Cannon Clifton from the Woodlands, Texas has given his verbal commitment to the Badgers for the 2013-2014 season. Alongside him, collegeswimming.com is reporting that Alexander Delakis has also pledged to the Badgers, giving Hite a strong 1-2 punch for the second-straight season.
The Badger men have some good pieces on their roster, most notably seniors Michael Weissand Daniel Lester, but until now haven't had that big-time sprint freestyler that can start to give their relays some credibility. OClifton gives them that, in spades.
He already has bests of 20.52/44.60/1:37.36 in the three shorter freestyles. There is only one returning swimmer, in all three of those events combined, who was faster than those marks on a flat-start last season, and that's Weiss in the 200 free. Both the Wisconsin 200 and 400 free relays were 10th (last) at last year's Big Ten Championships.
Clifton is also a 49-low in both the 100 fly and 100 back, plus a 1:49.20 in the 200 IM. He swims for The Magnolia Aquatics Club and the Woodlands High School. The are produces a ton of high level swimmers like NCAA Champion Michael McBroom at Texas, and Grayson Umbach – one of the top overall recruits in the class of 2013. Clifton is an example of a swimmer who was able to perform at a high level from age group through high school swimming: he still holds three Gulf Swimming 10 & under records.
Clifton should immediately help the relay situation, though Wisconsin will have to fill in some pieces around him after some big graduations last year and this.
That help comes in part in the form of Alex Delakis. He is a top-flight breaststroker from nearby Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he swims for the Eau Claire YMCA. He has bests of 55.75 in the 100 breast and 2:02.44 in the 200 breast.
He will add some depth to a very small Wisconsin breaststroke group that next year will be senior-heavy. That includes swimmers like Tariq Miller and Alex Riegert. Miller's flat-start best last season was only 55.32, but at Big Ten's, he stepped up on the 400 medley relay with a 54.18 split. Combined with 2013 freshman John Bushman (55.8), this could develop into a great three-way battle for medley spots next season.
Allison Schmitt on The Morning Swim Show @arschmitty @UGASwimDive
Oct. 26, 2012: Olympic champion Allison Schmitt is back on campus at the University of Georgia, and on today&os;s edition of The Morning Swim Show, she talks about making the transition from Olympic focus to college classes. Schmitt says that after the Olympics, she didn't take much of a break, returning to Athens, Ga., for classes, and getting back into the pool shortly thereafter. Her return to Georgia has been rough, as she has had to get acquainted to the freshman and sophomore classes, teammates she had not yet met. She also did not take classes during her time in Baltimore, so she's also re-adjusting to the class schedule.
Anthony Ervin releases the “Swim Swam Song”
The Anthony Ervin Written SwimSwam Song
Anthony Ervin, Olympic Champion and rock ‘n roll swimmer, has made headlines for his Indiegogo Fundraiser for the 2012 FINA/Arena World Cup Series, and captured an American Record in the short course meters 50 freestyle along the way.
If you're just learning about Ervin's Indiegogo fundraiser, he needed a way to raise funds for his extensive travel expenses. If you consider the round-the-world series — Dubai, Doha, Stockholm, Moscow, Berlin, Beijing, Tokyo, and Singapore — then you understand the cost of flights, hotel and food is high. (USA Swimming does not cover these expenses because the World Cup is an international series governed by FINA.)
SwimSwam participated by donating $250 for an Anthony Ervin written SwimSwam-theme song. VIDEO ABOVE. (Many thanks, Anthony!)
Presently Ervin has raised $12,277, exceeding his $10,000 goal, but there is a BIG reason to continue to donate. Anthony will give 50% of the funds over 10k to Mamade, whose “Water to the Thirsty” project is providing clean water to those in the world who need it most. Anthony has only 5 days left on his Indiegogo campaign.
