Joshua Zuchowski Re-Breaks 11-12 400 Yard IM NAG Record
By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

12-year old Joshua Zuchowski has broken his own 11-12 National Age Group Record in the 400 yard IM.
Swimming on Saturday in the Elite Showecase Classic in Clearwater, Florida, Zuchowski swam a 4:07.81 in the final to win the event for his age group. That improves upon the 4:08.92 that he swam at the 2017 NCSA National Championships 3 weeks ago as the new best-ever in the age group.
Zuchowski has now been almost four seconds better than the next-fastest swimmer in 11-12 history: Nick Silverthorn, who swam a 4:11.78 in 2008.
Zuchowski’s previous best time, until his recent record-breakinig run, was just 4:18.86.
Earlier this week, Zuchowski shattered Chas Morton’s 11-12 NAG Record in the 200 yard IM, which had stood for 33 years. He has also broken National Age Group Records in the 200 yard back (1:52.47), the 200 meter IM (2:14.93), and the 400 meter IM (4:45.09).

2017 ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
- Tuesday, April 4 – Saturday, April 8, 2017
- Riccione, Italy

A talented field of men’s 200 freestylers stepped up to challenge Gabriele Detti at the 2017 Italian Championships, but the distance ace once again landed on top of the podium. Sprint studs Filippo Magnini and Luca Dotto shot off to the early lead with a pair of 51.2 splits to Detti’s 52.77 at the 100-meter mark. They were no match for Detti’s back-half speed, however, as he raced to a dominant 1:46.38 victory. Magnini (1:48.32) held on for 3rd behind Filippo Megli (1:47.38), while Dotto settled for 4th in 1:48.37.
That time makes Detti the fastest man in the world this year. He’s now about a half second ahead of South Africa’s Chad Le Clos, who formerly headlined the rankings with a 1:46.84 from the South African Championships.
On the women’s side, distance standout Simona Quadarella jumped to the top of the world rankings in the 1500 free. Quadarella won the race by nearly 5 seconds with her 16:10.66, as Giulia Gabbrielleschi finished in 16:15.56 for silver. Quadarella’s time moves her up to #1 ahead of Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas (16:12.86), while Gabbrielleschi moves up to #3 ahead of Kapas’ Hungarian teammate Katinka Hosszu (16:16.92).
Also putting up a highlight reel performance on the final night of competition was Giacomo Carini. In the men’s 200 fly, Carini rocked a 1:55.40 for the gold, breaking his own former Italian National Record of 1:55.48. That time ranks him 4th in the world this year, and is just .4 behind Le Clos’ world-leading 1:55.00 from the South African Championships.
Additional Event Winners:
- Women’s 100 Breast- Martina Carraro, 1:07.87

Sydney Pickrem and Sarah Darcel, both representing Island Swimming, have each scratched out of an A-final tonight at the Canadian Swimming Trials. Pickrem is out of the 200 back after posting the 5th best morning time of 2:12.39, while Darcel has scratched the 100 fly where she was heading into the final 7th at 1:01.03.
Both were major players in the 400 IM final last night, as Pickrem booked her ticket to Budapest with the victory in a best time of 4:35.43. Darcel led that race at the halfway mark, but was passed on the final 50 by Mary-Sophie Harvey and ultimately finished 3rd. Though missing a spot on the team, she was well under the World Championship qualifying time in a best of 4:39.29.
The scratches aren’t surprising, as neither of these are their primary event. Both will contest the 200 IM tomorrow, where they’re both in the hunt for a spot, and Darcel is also entered in the 200 fly.
Pickrem is the Canadian record holder in the 200 IM, despite being seeded 5th for this meet, while Darcel is the 4th seed at 2:13.40, which is actually 0.01 under the qualifying standard. Darcel’s 200 fly seed is also high at 5th, but her time of 2:14.12 is over four seconds off the standard in that event.
Because of the scratches Hannah Genich moves into the 100 fly A-final, while Genevieve Cantin gains a spot in the 200 back A-final. Also scratching the 200 back was Taylor Ruck and Kayla Sanchez, who are now out of the B-final. The other scratch for finals tonight was Sarah Fournier, who is out of the women’s 50 breast B-final.

The 2017 Australian Swimming Championships kick-off today in Brisbane, where double World Champion and 2016 Olympic silver medalist Mitch Larkin will be making his mark on 2017. Competing in his first official meet under new coach Simon Cusack of Commercial Swimming Club, Larkin spoke pre-meet about his new training environment and how he’s fared thus far. Describing some of Cusack’s sets as ‘scary’, Larkin says his past 3-4 months with the storied coach sometimes had him feeling as though ‘I was just learning to swim.’
The 23-year-old also talks about the difference, at least mentally, between achieving a World Championship title and holding an Olympic gold medal in your hand.
Larkin takes on the 200m backstroke in Brisbane to get his national title pursuit underway.

Plenty of spots on the World Championship are up for grabs again tonight, with three selection and four total events on the docket for day 3 finals from Victoria.
Starting us off will be the women’s 400 free, which is now wide open after a no-show from top seed Mary-Sophie Harvey this morning in the heats. Both Mackenzie Padington and Kennedy Goss are within striking distance of the ‘A’ qualifying standard of 4:10.57.
Jeremy Bagshaw, Peter Brothers and Colin Gilbert were all within 1.5 seconds of each other this morning and will battle it out in the men’s 400. The fastest man this morning, Rafael Davila, will swim in the B-final due to his Venezuelan citizenship.
Penny Oleksiak and Katerine Savard are set to duel tonight in the women’s 100 fly, with rising star Rebecca Smith breathing down their necks. Savard was under the qualifying standard this morning in 57.96, and Oleksiak and Smith were both less than two tenths off. All three have already made the team.
The men’s event will be tight with Alexandre Perreault, Josiah Binnema and Mack Darragh all within half a second of each other this morning.
The women’s 200 back could very well be the race of the night, with world #1 Hilary Caldwell leading the way after a quick 2:08.48 showing this morning. Dominique Bouchard comes in as the second seed and will have her last shot at making the team, while Kylie Masse will push for a spot after winning the 50 back last night and scaring the 100 back world record on day 1.
After a no-show from Markus Thormeyer, the men’s 200 back shapes to be a battle between 50 winner Tim Zeng, 100 winner Javier Acevedo and Calgary’s Rob Hill. The three of them were within eight tenths of each other this morning, led by Zeng in 2:01.98.
Wrapping us up will be the 50 breaststroke, which won’t be used as a selection event for the World Championships. Both Rachel Nicol and Richard Funk will look to follow up their wins in the 100m event last night with another tonight. Funk is within range of the Canadian Record of 27.45.
Take a look at tonight’s scratches here.

Chinese Olympic Medalist Fu Yuanhui Stars in PETA Ad
By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui, who went viral in Rio after her shocked reaction to her bronze medal in the 100 backstroke, has become a spokesperson for the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Fu appeared in a recent PETA Asia ad wearing a shirt that says ‘Give Orcas Their Freedom – Reject Aquariums.’
“Confining orcas to aquarium tanks is like keeping a swimmer like me in a kids’ pool,” Fu says in the ad. “PETA Asia and I encourage everyone to let orcas and other animals swim free in the ocean, where they belong.”
Fu is the latest of another of aquatic athletes who have teamed up with PETA: a list that includes 7-time Olympic medalist Amanda Beard and U.S. water polo captain and legend Tony Azevedo.
The 2017 Chinese National Championships and World Championship Trials begin on Monday.

Bruneau is the second European to verbally commit to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute class of 2022; she will join Loulou Vos of Netherlands (but trains in the United Kingdom), who recently gave her verbal commitment, as well.
“I am very excited to announce my commitment to Virginia Tech, they offer a great education and excellent swimming program. I look forward to being a Hokie for the upcoming years and can’t wait to join the VT swimming family.”
Bruneau specializes in the shorter range of freestyle events. She swims for the club team Lahden Uimaseura Ry (LaUS) and represents Finland’s senior national team in international competition. At the Nordic Country Championships (SCM) in Kolding, Denmark last December, Bruneau won the bronze medal in the women’s open 50m free, after having swum the fastest overall time in the meet in prelims (25.26); she placed third in the 18-and-over 100m free (fourth overall), and was 13th in the 18-and-over category in prelims of the 200m free.
Her best 50/100 LCM times come from the 2016 Finland Championships last March, where she was 10th overall in the women’s open 50m free and 8th in the open 100m free. Her best SCM times (converted to SCY) are as follows:
- 50 SCM free – 25.23 (22.72)
- 100 SCM free – 55.62 (50.10)
- 200 SCM free – 2:05.65 (1:53.19)

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

In connection with their letter to the Brazilian Olympic Committee and Brazilian president on Friday, a group of Brazilian swimmers have put together a video of a number of Brazilian elite swimmers. The video, intended to raise the spirits of the country’s swimmers in a time of turmoil, features the swimmers saying “Somos a natação brasileira,” or “We are Brazilian Swimming.”
The CBDA is mired in a scandal that this week came to a head when the long-time federation president Coarcy Nunes was arrested, and the organization lost its most visible sponsor of 26 years, the national postal service Correios, cancelled their sponsorship agreement.
