Day five prelims of the 2025 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships brought about another British Age Record after a big-time performance at the hands of Jacob Mills.
17-year-old Mills of Repton, the new training home of Olympic multi-medalist Adam Peaty, ripped a lifetime best of 21.96 to claim the top seed out of the men’s 50m free heats.
The teen beat some impressive company en route to landing lane 4, including Olympic medalist Ben Proud who touched in 22.06 as the 2nd seed and Matt Richards who notched 22.24 as the 4th seed.
As for Mills, this morning’s outing represented his first-ever result under the 22-second barrier.
Entering this competition, Mills’ lifetime best rested at the 22.38 put up at the Edinburgh International Swim Meet just last month. Prior to that, Mills’ PB stood at the 22.45 registered at the Rotterdam Qualification Meet in December.
The British Age Record for 17-year-old boys has been on the books since 2016 and was represented by Tom Fannon‘s mark of 22.24. Mills blew that to bits with his 21.96 and now ties Olympian Mark Foster as GBR’s 6th-swiftest 50m free performer in history.
