Guilherme Costa of Brazil swam to a new Americas record posting a 3:42.76 in the men’s 400 freestyle. Costa broke the previous record of a 3:42.78 set by Larsen Jensen of the USA in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics.
Americas record refers to a combination of both the North America and South America. As Costa hails from Brazil in South America, the record counts for the Americas as well.

Costa was out slightly faster today which made him come home a little slower than Jensen did in 2008. Jensen saved up, especially on the first 50 and was able to come home in three 27-point splits at the end of the race. Still, Costa was able to sneak under Jensen’s record at the touch.
Jensen’s record notably still stands as the American record and earned him bronze back in Beijing. Costa just missed medaling tonight by 0.26 seconds and was visibly emotional after the race on deck.
