2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Great Britain’s Luke Greenbank downed his own hours-old national record en route to claiming the top seed in the men’s 200m backstroke tonight in Budapest.

While competing in the semi-finals of the 2back on this night 5 of the European Championships, 23-year-old Greenbank posted the fastest time of his career in 1:54.43. That shaved another .24 off of the 1:54.67 national standard he already produced this morning.

Where his previous swim consisted of splits of 27.02/28.61/29.50/29.54, tonight’s effort was completed via 27.00/28.58/29.58/29.27, showing how the man shaved just a little here and there to check-in with the new mark with the final yet to go.

As we reported this morning with his first record-breaking swim, Loughborough’s Greenbank continues to show big drops in the 200 backstroke – after no drops from a 1:56.89 in 2015 as a 17-year old until 2019, he’s now improved over 2 seconds in the last 2 years. His swim now ranks him 4th in the world this season. He also won a bronze medal in the event at the 2019 World Championships.

Greenbank now ranks as the #2 swimmer in the world this season, sitting only behind Russian world champion Evgeny Rylov.
