Katrina Radke talked with Whitney Hite after his team, University of Wisconsin raced Cal Berkeley this past Saturday.
Whitney is in his second season as the Head Coach of the University of Wisconsin men's and women's swimming program. According to their press guide: “Ten school records fell during Hite's first year on the job, and the number of NCAA qualifiers nearly doubled on both the men's (from one to two) and women's (from six to 11) squads compared to last year.”
Before that, he coached at University of Washington, as the head coach from 2006-09. During his time there, he helped them reach their highest ranking ever at NCAA's for the women, with 12th place, and the best place for men in the past 30 years, with top 16 finish. Additionally, he was the assistant coach at Cal Berkeley from 2004-06, helping them to three top 10 finishes, and at University of Georgia from 1998-2003, where they won three years and runner up two years
He also has the champion mindset and experience, having been a swimmer, himself, at one of the longest lasting premiere men's programs, under Eddie Reese at University of Texas.
In this interview, Whitney expresses feeling good about how his team did both at the Stanford and Cal dual meet. They stepped up and raced well. Additionally, he shares the importance of building the proper culture, and building a team fostering excellence.
We all know he is a gem in the coaching world, and we can expect to see wonderful things from him and his athletes, over the course of his career.
Enjoy the interview,
Katrina
