USA Swimming has released the first draft of their 2013 World University Games roster, which was selected from (generally) the top two collegiate finishers at the U.S. Open meet a few weeks ago. The 2013 edition of the meet will be held in Kazan, Russia
Keep in mind that these swimmers don't have to be currently competing collegiately, they just have to be enrolled in college this coming year, which is what left the door open for veterans Mike Alexandrov and Ashley Steenvoorden to join this team well after their college eligibility is up.
No surprise, but the defending champion Cal women have put at least 4 swimmers on this roster: Liv Jensen, Catherine Breed, Rachael Acker, and Cindy Tran. USC is also wlel represented with Kendyl Stewart, Jasmine Tosky, Andrea Kropp, and Meghan Hawthorne all representing the Trojans.
These lineups are still somewhat in a state of flux, as any swimmer who makes next summer's World Championship team would be ineligible for the World University Games team. That includes swimmers like Megan Romano, Kelsey Floyd, and Kevin Cordes, all of whom are within reach of a berth for Barcelona.
The Big Ten men asserted their power, with almost a third of the lineup holding degrees from the midwestern conference (7 out of 22).
USA Swimming has expanded their definition of “proceeding towards a degree or diploma at a university or similar institution” to include high school seniors; there are at least two high school swimmers on this team in Jack Conger and Chelsea Chenault, who will be enrolled in universities (most likely) by the time this meet rolls around next July.
The current roster has 17 men and 22 women, which is much smaller than the 26 and 26 that they are limited to. There are still unfilled spots, for example the second swimmer in the women's 100 breaststroker.
