At the British Gas ASA National Swimming Championships 2012 today, David Carry booked a spot at his third Olympic Games, overhauling Ieuan Lloyd on the final 50m in the men's 400 freestyle to set a lifetime best of 3:46.86, old PB being 3:47.17 from Beijing 2008. An impressive comeback after the Trials in March when he was only 0.23 seconds from making the qualifying time of 3:48.92.

“I’ve never been so emotional after a swim before,” said Carry. “Just before the first trials I had a back injury which was the first time I’ve had an injury my whole career.”

Already qualified Rebecca Adlington claimed 200 freestyle gold in 1:58.68 to strengthen her claim for a relay spot at London 2012, while Jazmin Carlin missed out by finishing fourth in 2:00.01. Lloyd also failed to grab an individual spot in the men's 400, but has already secured a place in the 4×200, and looks forward to the individual 200 meter tomorrow.

“Because I was so close to getting in the individual 400m I've got some high hopes for the 200m and maybe I can get the individual for that,” Lloyd told BBC Sport Wales.”
