Overlooked on the final night of the 2012 Swimvitational in Omaha Sunday was that Kevin Cordes' 100 breaststroke victory was a new 17-18 National Age Group Record.

The Arizona Wildcat swam a 1:01.23 that broke a decade-old mark set by the legendary Brendan Hansen in 2000 at 1:01.55 at the US Olympic Trials, where he placed 3rd in the event behind only Ed Moses and Pat Calhoun.

Here's the comparative splits:

Hansen ('00): 28.87 – .32.87
Cordes ('12): 28.79 – 32.44

This shows how good Cordes is in closing this race. It speaks volume that he's already surpassed that record of Hansen's, the young 6'5 Cordes will get at least two more chances to take the mark even lower – he won't age up until after the U.S. Open is completed.

Cordes, whose father played football at Arizona, adds this to his National Age Group (and American, for that matter) Record in the 100 yard breaststroke set at the NCAA Championships.

Thanks to commenter “John” for pointing out the record.
